Minorin Live @ DaiCon: the j1m0ne rundown

So the first ever seiyuu live I’ve been to is now over, and doing a post-mortem now I still gotta pinch myself. Damn bloody surreal, these 3 days. Probably the most tiring few weeks I’ve gone through in my life but the payoff was so awesome I’d do it 20,000 times over.

Aftermath:
1. My right arm aches (frantic lightstick waving)
2. My calves ache (frantic jumping)
3. My brain has totally shut down (2 weeks of sleeplessness catches up with you)

Actually my arm started aching 2 songs in but it got better after that and I didn’t feel a thing by Junpaku Sanctuary. Probably adrenaline. Straight after the live I fell asleep on one of the chairs outside the hall, completely drained of any remaining energy I had… but I still had to drive the long drive back to the city.

By the time I got back from my flight on Monday morning I was dog tired, nothing anyone said to me entered my brain - stuff just went in the left ear and out the right. Had to rush to a meeting the same afternoon, where I amusingly gave one of my best presentations ever yet (MINORIN-POWAAARDE ADRENALINE RUSHHU!!!) before going back home and collapsing in bed. Slept 11 hours between 3pm-6am - that’s 11 out of 14 hours, lol) but I’m still sleepy - 15 days’ worth of sleep debt can’t be repaid easily!

Notes

  • Getting the setlist out in advance gave fans a chance to practise their calls. It was also somewhat arbitrarily decided that the 10 hardcore Japanese fans would stand in the front row to lead proceedings during the live. But kudos to them, they seem a really bunch of cool guys, bringing a huge box of homemade flags and loads of lightsticks to hand out to the AWSM ticket holders. And yes, those flags did eventually make their way through to Minorin and her entourage - you can see her holding one on her blog).
  • The setlist on paper, seems rather bizarre - I mean, Fragment (from Suika AS+) is probably as obscure a choice as you’re ever gonna get, but I think it fit in perfectly well within the context of the overall setlist.
  • Yuki, Muon, Madobe ni Nite is definitely a song I could’ve done without, but bearing in mind the high ratio of weaboo to actual Minorin fans, it was a necessary choice or else the casual watchers probably wouldn’t recognise a single song. Unlike us Minoritards of course :3
  • Perhaps with a bit more consideration Junpaku Sanctuary could’ve been placed nearer the end (swap with Prism maybe?).
  • Also it was supposed to be the original version of Paradise Lost, but at next nest works better in a live context - the 40-second intro gives Minorin a breather after Aoi Kotou. And first ever live performance of Tomorrow’s Chance, how lucky are we?
  • The Actual Live
The live was an exhilarating experience as you would expect, Minorin was total quality, belting out song after song perfectly and the atmosphere (where I was standing) was pretty electric. But hey, what you hear from a live performance is oh so very different from what you get on record - stuff you never used to like (Voyager Train, Ameagari…) suddenly sound a zillion times better when performed right in front of you, and the interaction with the fans makes things so much more special. Time flew by so quickly, I was like…. ‘oh shit’ when Tomorrow’s chance rolled around, knowing the live was drawing to an end.

Front row seats are always gonna be awesome - a prime view of Minorin in her glorious get-up!!! …though at this point I only remember the boots cos the kebaya blew my mind off its perch. Obviously at the front you’re afforded a bit more space to manuever round but apologies to J*c*, I still managed to bang her on the head a few times with my elbow thanks to overenthusiastic waving. And yes I shouldn’t have worn bloody jeans, jumping around like an arse meant they kept falling to my ankles. Yeah the 3 of us bonkurasu were all standing right at the front, probably the only crazy hardcore female Minorin fans as well - the after live group pic consisting of the fans is so…. testosterone-dominated xD

Favourite parts of the live - the mesmerising Junpaku Sanctuary as well as the double whammy of Aoi Kotou & Paradise Lost - really frantic lightstick action during the latter! I’m glad all my fave Minorin songs were performed - the three I just listed + Shijin no Tabi and Contact 13th, which is always a perfect choice for an encore with its sing-a-long-ability.

    Other comments

  • ……dunno who the hell started shouting ‘Encore!’ before Minorin sang Everlasting. Needs to be shot for brainlessness.
  • The water stealing incident is totally retarded. I don’t find it amusing or something to take pride in at all.
  • I don’t really have any comments over the lighting….well I didn’t notice much apart from the blackout incident, probably because the light shining forth from Minorin’s flawless porcelain skin was doing all the lighting for me :3
  • Man, I really can’t believe it’s over so fast. This was a one-in-a-lifetime chance, with plenty of great times had - memories are stuff money can’t buy and I’ll take them with me to my grave (together with Minorin, hopefully). I hope the live made more people Minorin fans, she’s just a really awesome person and deserves all the success she can get.

Time to plan for the next few live events, now I’ve got a bit more $$$s in my pocket I can afford to do whatever I want! And I know I want moaarrr of this kind of live energy….. shit am I losing my rationality (and my 5-digit bank balance).

ZOMG!!! I usually try to avoid webspeak like that, but were you really in that picture on her blog? If so, which of the 3 Bonklers is which?

Heh nice to meet you (briefly)! Sorry I shook hands with too many random people so I might have seemed in a bit of a daze.

      @Andrew
